Gottland

Gottland is a non-traditional look on the 20th century. An anthology film presenting original stories – the affair between the Czech actor Lída Baarová and Joseph Goebbels, the story of Eduard Kirchberger, a flying writer collaborating with the STB, a Baťa idea of an assembly-line production and the tragic decision of Zdeněk Adamec to set himself on fire in protest against the system. Each of the stories is formally surprising - whether it is rotoscoping in the story The Flying Horse by Viera Čákanyová, creation of new “assembly-line film” in the story 86 400 by Lukáš Kokeš or an original connection of live-action film and reality in the story The Virginity of Lída Baarova by Petr Hátle.

All five directors of Gottland, Viera Čákanyová, Petr Hátle, Rozálie Kohoutová, Lukáš Kokeš, Radovan Síbrt, and Klára Tasovská, studied documentary filmmaking at FAMU in Prague, but in this film they are crossing the boundaries between documentary, animation and fiction. The film is based on the famous best-selling book Gottland by the Polish journalist Mariusz Szczygieł.
