Cinergy with Claire Denis
The next guest of the educational platform Cinergy Prague is french director and scriptwriter Claire Denis. Her master class will take place on 29. 9. 16:00 at Cinema 35 in the French Institute.
Claire Denis spent her childhood in colonial Africa. In her native France she first studied economics, but then moved to IDHEC film school, where she teaches today. She worked as assistant director for Jacques Rivette, Costa-Gavras, Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch. She debuted in 1988 with the film Chocolate, which was screened in competition at Cannes. We should also mention her films I Can’t Sleep(1994), Nénette and Boni (1996), awarded a Golden Leopard at the Locarno IFF, and 35 Shots of Rum (2008), later sent into Czech distribution as well. Czech cinemas have also screened the erotic horror film Trouble Every Day(2001), likewise shown at Cannes, and the collection of film stories Ten Minutes Older: The Cello (2002), for which she shot the segment "Vers Nancy”. We should also mention the film Beau travail (1999), which premiered at Venice, as did White Material.
The majority of Denis' oeuvre uses location work over studio work. She sometimes places her actors as if they were positioned for still photography. She uses longer takes with a stationary camera and frames things in long shot, resulting in fewer close ups. However, Denis' cinematic and topical focus always remains relentlessly on the faces and bodies of her protagonists. The subject's body in space, and how the particular terrain, weather, and color of the landscape influences and interacts with the human subjects of her films maintains cinematic dominance.
Tim Palmer explores Denis' work as a self-declared formalist and brilliant film stylist per se; an approach the filmmaker herself has declared many times in interview to be as much about sounds, textures, colors and compositions as broader thematic concerns or social commitments.
