Two days with Pode Bal group in Ponec Theatre
25th–26th August 2011
Ponec Theatre
The Art stems from personal experience and at the same time, from the environment which surrounds the creator. Artistic creation makes it possible to affect this environment retrospectively, argue with it and develop a critical dialogue. To create an anti-environment without which all other environments would be invisible…
Why shall we employ contemporary communication strategies in independent creation? Current culture is more and more commercial-like as advertising does not reject its expressions, on contrary it uses its branches for its own sake. Avant-garde has always served as an experimental laboratory for mass and commercial culture.
Contemporary culture is permeated with advertising principles to such extent which makes it impossible to ignore them. If the Art or activist projects want to participate actively in the constantly ongoing social dialogue which formulates opinions and values, it has to take into account advertising principles too. The Art can either understand their dominant role and influence on artistic creation or make direct use of commercial mechanisms and strategies as a means of its own creation.

Pode Bal
The Czech group Pode Bal was founded in 1998 and their work grew out of a critique of visual communication. The group has re-policized the art scene, and has been significantly engaged in discussion centered around drugs and the law, parliamentary election, taboo problems related to the eviction of Germans after the Second World War, and the critique of art institutions. The group has realized many projects in public places and media. At the exhibition entitled Malík Urvi (a pun meaning literally Tear Off the Little Finger and implying Little Whores), portraits of well-known political, economic and cultural figures were exhibited together with publicly available information regarding their political career and collaboration with the secret police.
